Carl, Ellie, and Kleenex

Ok, normally I try not to do the video thing twice in a row, and I promise I'm working on a story that should be ready in a little while.  But I've been thinking a lot about Pixar's "Up" today.

Have you seen "Up?"  It was my absolute favorite movie of 2009, possibly EVER!  Picture this:  Alan is out of town, and it's a rainy afternoon.  I decide to catch a movie by myself, so I check the paper and see that "Up" is the next film playing.

I arrive at the theater, where 9,000 children and I take our seats.  The opening montage begins, and within SEVEN minutes, I am WEEPING!  Amazingly, none of the kids around me are affected the same way.  They think the movie is fun.  They look at me with concerned faces.  One little girl contemplates giving me a Kleenex from her Mom's purse.

At the movie's conclusion, I blow my nose in a Kleenex (thanks, little girl!) and try to pull myself together to leave the darkened theater.  When I arrive home, I describe the plot to Alan, which triggers a whole new crying jag.

I can't explain the hold this movie has on me, I can only tell you it is intense!  I think it has something to do with this opening montage, expertly depicting the married life of Carl and Ellie.  It touches that soft spot in me that dreams about happy marriages and growing old together.  Quite simply, I love these two!

Carl meets Ellie when they are both young children and enormous fans of Charles Muntz, an adventure explorer.  They vow to be friends and someday explore the world together, particularly the place made famous by Muntz, Paradise Falls.  That's pretty much all we know at the beginning of the film.

Then, this montage begins, and in a little over four minutes, the shared life of Carl and Ellie is intricately revealed.  Without a single spoken word, you know exactly everything about this couple and the loving relationship they share.  I honestly don't think I've witnessed anything done with more perfection.

I know you've probably already seen this.  But will you watch it once more with me?  I guarantee you you'll be smiling (and, in my case, CRYING!) for the rest of the hour!  Here it is...

Oh I cry every time I watch this. It is the whole fertility thing that gets me most I think because i suffered from it for so long and am again now. But i do love the relationship they had and how it shows a couple sticking together through good and bad. Which is how it is supposed to be.

Sobbing, oh my word. That's just so beautiful and heart-wrenching. I haven't seen the film, but now I know that I'll sob my way through it. Beautifully so though.

Oh my. We all went to see this at the drive in, in the kids school holidays, all crammed into the back of hte station wagon. Lovely husband and I both cried. The kids thought were mad & just scoffed more poporn.

My kid has watched it over 10 times I'm sure and he still doesn't realize the wife died.

This movie should have won best picture. In my opinion, it is the best animated feature ever made.

It really was such a tear-jerker wasn't it? I love that, because it was animation, they were able to craft it perfectly. But there was such detail in the scenes, such normalcy, that it could have been a real life couple we were watching! Loved this movie, loved the story, loved the way it made me feel a little of just about everything as I watched it :)

I spent most of the film in tears, yes. Now my wife wants to get it on DVD and I'm not convinced it'll be any different a second time around!

Here I sit at my desk at 8:32 am and I'm crying like a baby. jeez this was too much at this hour. I can see why this affected you. It really moved me. Thankfully I work from home or I'd be in an office with mascara all over the place.

I have not seen this movie but I have wanted to. Now I really want to! Thank you!

What a tug at the heart. I haven't seen the movie and it is now on my list of movies I have to see. My husband and I will be married for 35 years next month...we can watch and blubber together.

I still need to see this one and it is on my Netflix queue. My wife has a real aversion to animated films so I I'll have to sneak this one in on one of our movie viewing nights.

It is that opening scene and that opening scene alone that turns Up into my favorite Pixar movie, bar none. No gags, no spoofs of anything, not even any words. Just simple, pure, heartfelt... it's a work of art. So classy.

I normally wouldn't take the time to sit through that whole thing, but I did it. And I cried. I found myself wanting and hoping for what they had, but the ending...it just filled my eyes right up. What a tender montage.

I'm going to HAVE to see the movie. Thank you.

I bawl hysterically every time I watch this movie....yet my 5yo twins seem to only laugh (because what is better than a talking dog?)....I think it hits hard on the "one day"......yup, I hope I go first! LOL

A great reminder to cherish all of our "TODAYS"!

Oh yeah, I cried like a baby. I scared my kids. They kept going, "What's wrong?"

Dana said...

I was crying so hard at that point not only did the people 2 rows back send down a tissue, it got to the point I was gasping for air!!! Dwayne on one side and my 17 year old son on the other side of me kept patting my hands reminding me, "It's JUST a movie." Other people have told me either they didn't cry at all (cold, heartless stones!), or that their eyes welled up a little. I am SO glad to know I wasn't the only one sobbing at that point in the movie!! I'm not even going to watch the clip because I don't have "provisions" nearby (tissue, or-more accurately-a dish towel!!

:D

Okay...so I couldn't resist. Thinking I've seen this montage many times now, surely I can get through it this time... I ...watched. My t-shirt is SOAKED now. Amazing how they could pack so much into 4 minutes without one single word. Great work. Great post.

I haven't seen it yet, but my grand-daughter has it on DVD, so now I am going to get her to bring it over. I'll make sure to have the Kleenex handy as I know I will need them for sure. xxx

I saw the preview for Up: an old man and a chubby boy scout being carried away by thousands of balloons to a wondrous place filled with funny birds and beautiful scenery. I was stoked! I love fun kids movies! But, like you, within the first few minutes I was in tears and nearly snotting all over myself. Nice one, Pixar; you got us.

:)

i could not believe how sad it was for a kids movie, I meant he girl has a miscarriage doesn't she? anyway I loved the idea, and the color of the movie, I cried way to much and my son kept asking why was i crying.

Oh my goodness! Now I'm weeping! Beautiful. And such beautiful music as well!

I rented this movie for my son and didn't really watch it. I am sobbing as I watch just this clip because it reminds me so much of my grandparents (even though they had 9 kids) but their total appreciation and love of each other is what amazes me. I can only hope that someday I find someone special enough to share that with.
